The accident occurred at 535 Avenue M NW in Winter Haven, near Lake Silver.

We reached out to City of Winter Haven’s Public Safety Public Information Officer (PIO) Jamie Brown and she stated that the cyclist was alert and talking. It is protocol for a patient to be airlifted when there is a pedestrian or cyclist involved.

Polk County Fire Rescue’s PIO, Nathaniel Gale confirmed one trauma alert patient was transported via helicopter.

The cyclist is a 17-year-old male who reportedly darted out in front of the vehicle. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. No spinal injuries believed to have occurred, though the patient may have a broken leg, according to Brown.

The roadway was temporarily closed down for the helicopter, but all lanes are back open as of now.
