Calmer traffic, wider sidewalks, and more parking spaces. These are some of the improvements 3rd Street NW is expected to receive now that city commissioners have approved an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation.

At their recent meeting on Mon. July 28, Winter Haven city commissioners voted unanimously to approve a resolution approving a Local Agency Program (LAP) agreement with FDOT.

The agreement awards the city a $1,690,315 grant to help fund the construction of street enhancements along 3rd Street NW from Avenue D NW to South Lake Silver Drive.

The proposed upgrades, as highlighted by the city agenda item, will include:

• Traffic calming and intersection improvements to enhance safety;

• Enhanced pedestrian facilities to support walkability within the corridor;

• Minor Landscape Improvements;

• Additional on-street parking; and,

• Roadway improvements that enhance overall drivability.

For these proposed improvements, the City will be reimbursed by FDOT “a maximum of $1,690,315,” wrote Brittany Hart, Public Works Director. The construction for this project is anticipated to be completed by Dec. 31, 2028.

“No City match is required, unless the cost of the project exceeds the FDOT funding,” Hart wrote. “Once design is complete, the City will have expended $282,600 in local funds to complete the design of the project.”
